Tools & Technology Heritage Kit

A collection of short Alutiiq cultural lessons.

This work catalogs the collection of nearly five hundred Alutiiq/Sugpiaq cultural items held by the Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography, or the Kunstkamera, in St. Petersburg, Russia.

This work includes contributions of many different authors, the vast majority of whom personally worked on the Section 14(h)(1) of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act.

According to the Alutiiq Museum and Archaeological Repository, a hone is a typically long, narrow, waterworn cobbles of greywacke or granite—unmodified rod-shaped pieces that fit nicely in the hand.

According to the Alutiiq Museum and Archaeological Repository, notched net sinkers became most common during the Kachemak Tradition and indicated a shift towards harvesting vast amounts of fish. The notches in the stone made it easier to tie to the net.

This partially formed spearhead would have been made through the use of other stone tools to sharpen it into a point.
